Here is a possible mitigation option suggested by technical experts for the Appalachian Critical Biodiversity Area:
Support research into the effectiveness of forestry BMPs (best management practices) related to steep slope logging techniques; followed by efforts to adapt the BMPs if/as indicated by the results.
University of Kentucky has conducted and documented such research on BMP Effectiveness on Robinson Forest a few years back. This study has been published, the KY BMP Board reviewed and voted to adapt new state BMP guidelines as a result of the study. You can contact UK Dept of Forestry for more details.
Could a component of this effort also include investing in harvesting equipment that is more appropriate for harvesting on steep slopes (e.g. aerial cable yarding)? Perhaps this could include promotion of logger training and even the creation of a fund that provides capital assistance for contractors to purchase more advanced technology.
